HAIR

Hair

Hair fabrication is a long, repetitive process, but I find it therapeutic and quite rewarding. For the SCAD stop motion films, Art House and Preserved, I was the lead hair fabricator.

Starting with raw alpaca wool, we washed and dried the material several times before dying it with fabric dyes and semi-permanent hair dyes. The hair is then individually punched into custom cast silicone caps. Depending on the hair design, it is styled with heated brass rods, various hair gels, and silicone glue.

I began my journey into hair during stop motion 1 where I used my own hair to create wefts which were glued onto a wig cap. This was fun and fairly effective, but not nearly as nice as the dyed and punched alpaca approach.
